Miami Beach Dive Against Debris

  • South Beach Dive and Surf Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for a two-tank reef cleanup off of Miami Beach on Sunday, November 19th! All you need is your open-water diver certification. All cleanup supplies will be provided by Debris Free Oceans & Southeast Florida Action Network!

We will meet at the dive shop at 12 pm to fill out paperwork and get gear together. We will then head to the boat for a safe-handling workshop by Debris Free Oceans, and learn about how to safely remove debris from the reef. We will then go dive at 2 different sites along the Florida Reef Tract while picking up any debris that is safe to remove.

On our way back to shore, we will collect data about our debris findings to submit to Project AWARE Foundation and Southeast Florida Action Network. This data will be used by researchers to better understand the distribution and transport of marine debris, and will ultimately be used to inform policy-makers and guide site selection for future cleanups.

Come help clean our beautiful ocean post-Irma and contribute to marine debris research! Call us at 305-531-6110 to make your reservation or book online using the link provided and save 5%!

Email maddie@southbeachdivers.com with any questions, or to be put on an info list and find out about future conservation events.

Join us, the Wynwood Yard, and UM Physical Therapy students for the Wynwood Yard's monthly community clean up. Working together to clean up Wynwood, we will make an impact on the neighborhood, as well as Biscayne Bay and our Miami beaches. Trash eventually makes its way from city centers like Wynwood to our waterways, harming marine life and water quality.

Meet at 9am at The Wynwood Yard. Grab your cup, trash bags, gloves, pickers, and directions, and we'll make our way through the neighborhood. We'll grab a snack and drink along the way! End at the Bar at the Yard with more refreshments.

Cost is only $20 to participate, and guests will receive an awesome Klean Kanteen reusable cup that will be filled along the way by participating partners! (It will also get you a quarter back on every beer purchased The Wynwood Yard when you bring your cups!) Proceeds raised go to Debris Free Oceans.

Keg & Klean

Join The Wynwood Yard, Debris Free OceansMiami Waterkeeper, and New Leaders Council - Florida for this month's community clean up. Working together to clean up Wynwood, we will make an impact on the neighborhood, as well as Biscayne Bay and our Miami beaches. Trash eventually makes its way from city centers like Wynwood to our waterways, harming marine life and water quality.

Meet at 6 pm at The Wynwood Yard. Bring a canned good (or a few) to trade in for a cocktail from Simple Vodka. Grab your special reusable cup, trash bags, gloves, pickers, and directions, and we'll make our way through the neighborhood. First stop, Veza Sur Brewing Co for a frosty "Chopp" (details below). We'll grab food along the way at a new eatery in town... details to be confirmed soon! End at the Bar at the Yard with more refreshments and live music, TBD.

Cost is only $20 to participate, and guests will receive an awesome Klean Kanteen reusable cup that will be filled along the way by participating partners! (It will also get you a quarter back on every beer purchased The Wynwood Yard when you bring your cups!) Proceeds raised go to Debris Free Oceans and Miami Waterkeeper. Purchase tickets in advance here.

What is a CHOPP? Vez Sur essentially developed their "own version of the super popular Chopp [shoh-pee] in Brazil. It is essentially an ice-cold and crisp Lager with a refreshing foam (thick and creamy Cappuccino-like) that you can drink through. So it is perfect for a hot Miami day, super refreshing and easy to drink. The quality of the foam is the result of running the crisp Lager through the serving lines at close to freezing temperature and higher pressure than you normally would. The serving faucet also plays a role. But the best part of Chopp [shoh-pee] is that the beer will keep coming until you signal stop by placing your coaster on top of your glass. You will never have to worry about that 2nd beer you would love to have. Before you know it, it will be on its way..."

The Wynwood Yard will be continuing with monthly community clean ups in the neighborhood throughout the year, teaming up with local non-profits and community partners.

Our first "unofficial" community clean up was on June 24th with WeCannTeen Leadership, Culture & Service Learning Tours and in partnership with Dr Smood, who graciously provided refreshments for the 50 participants along their way. Thank you also to Radiate Miami and dellafor end-of-the-road sips and bites.

Our first "official" clean up was a pub crawl pick up, and we partnered with Boxelder Craft Beer MarketWynwood Brewing CompanyCoyo Tacoand Saltwater Brewery. You can check out photos here: https://www.facebook.com/pg/thewynwoodyard/photos/?tab=album&album_id=1928349797488558

Each cleanup will take place at a different time of day, featuring unique non-profit partners, and a different "theme." At each one, participants will gather and walk the neighborhoods along pre-arranged routes to help make Wynwood a cleaner place. Proceeds of participant donations will go toward partnering non-profit organizations.

Bags and gloves will be provided.

Complimentary snacks and refreshments will be provided along the way and after the cleanup, depending on that month's partners.

Pub Crawl Pick Up

Join The Wynwood Yard and Debris Free Oceans for our first "official" community clean up, which doubles as a pub crawl!

Working together to clean up Wynwood, we will make an impact on the neighborhood, as well as Biscayne Bay and our Miami beaches. Trash eventually makes its way from city centers like Wynwood to our waterways, harming marine life and water quality.

We'll start out with a beer and welcome, then make our way toward The Wynwood Yard, grabbing a complimentary taco at Coyo Taco and then a beer Boxelder Craft Beer Market along the way to keep us going on our mission. End at the Bar at the Yard with a final beer courtesy of Saltwater Brewing.

Dive Against Debris in Key Largo - 7/8/17

Join South Beach Divers and Debris Free Oceans for a discounted two-tank dive in the beautiful Key Largo, while cleaning up our reefs and helping to keep our oceans healthy and pristine! Afterwards, we will convene at Sharkey's Pub & Galley Restaurant for a community event featuring cheap beer, a raffle and silent auction. All proceeds will be going to the nonprofits Debris Free Oceans and the Project AWARE Foundation. We will also submit debris data to Project Aware and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, contributing to the advancement of marine debris research.

All you need is your open-water diver certification! All cleanup materials will be provided. As incentive to help pick up the reef, this trip will be $20 cheaper than our regular Key Largo dive trips!

We will meet at the shop at 9:00 a.m. for a safe-handling workshop with snacks and coffee, featuring a presentation about how to report reef health by a representative from SEAFAN (the Southeast Florida Action Network). At 10 o'clock, we will fill out paperwork and get gear together, and then head out for Key Largo! We will stop in Florida City for lunch on our way down; either pack a lunch or bring money for Subway, Pollo Tropical, Dunkin Donuts or McDonalds.

We will get to the boat around 1 p.m. and get back to shore around 5 after our two dives. At that time, you can either stay for the community event or choose to go back to Miami with the divers from other trips. If you leave immediately after the dive you will get back to Miami around 7, and if you stay for the community event you will get back to Miami around 9 or 10- depends on how much fun were having!

Please indicate in the comments of your reservation if you would like to drive yourself, head back immediately after the dive or head back after Sharkey's.

This trip is now posted online on our trip calendar here: http://www.southbeachdivers.com/trips_calendar.asp?jump&subNext.x=55&subNext.y=13&CURDATE=01%2F06%2F2017 . Book online and save 5%, or call us at (305) 531-6110 to make your reservation.
